Ball stylus are the simplest and most often used together with height gauges which are supplied with a probe insert of this kinds. Due to their shape, these accessories are suitable for most probing applications. As each application requires a particular stylus, there are many versions available depending on their diameter and length.

Conical probes are in principle not used for conventional measure such as "probing", since it is not possible by their geometry to trigger in an accurate way a measuring point. They are mainly used for determining the location of bores as their shape allows quick mechanical positioning at the center of these elements.
